A history of serving with heart

For more than a century, Thrivent has been helping Christians build solid financial futures and strengthen their communities. Today, we serve more than 2 million members nationwide. Here’s a look at some of the key moments in our history:

In the early 20th century, there was no social safety net. Back then, an accident or other misfortune could destroy a family’s welfare. By offering insurance contracts to Lutherans, we helped create mutual security where there had once been individual risk.

In 1902, Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) was chartered as a fraternal benefit society. Lutheran Brotherhood (LB), a similar organization, formed in 1917. Both organizations brought members together to support one another under the common bond of Lutheranism.

In 2001, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans was formed through the merger of Aid Association for Lutherans and Lutheran Brotherhood. As a not-for-profit on the Fortune 500 list, Thrivent continued to support families and communities in more ways than ever.

In 2013, our members voted overwhelmingly to extend the common bond of membership beyond Lutherans, to include all Christians. This historic decision meant we would be able to help millions more people be wise with money while living generously.

"I went with Thrivent. Given its financial track record, and the recommendations that I got from people in my church, it wasn't a hard decision for me to make."*
