On Oct. 29, 2016, the American Cancer Society recognized Thrivent Financial with one of its highest honors, the Spirit of Hope Award.

This honor is traditionally given each year to individuals who distinguish themselves in the fight against cancer.

Among other initiatives, 2016 marked the second year in a row that Thrivent served as a national corporate sponsor of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event.

"Our partnership with the American Cancer Society is a source of pride for our organization," says Terry Rasmussen, president of Thrivent. "We are honored to help strengthen the work the American Cancer Society does and visibly support our own members who are struggling with cancer."

Here's a look at how Thrivent contributes to the American Cancer Society in 2016:

  • Together Thrivent and its members sponsored 76 Relay for Life teams and raised more than $161,000.
  • Thrivent created custom Thrivent Action Teams to help support the Relay for Life event. About 450 members hosted these unique teams, raising more than $500,000.
  • Thrivent members can help give back to the community through our member-advised charitable grant program: Thrivent Choice®. Many members choose to direct Choice Dollars to the American Cancer Society. Since November 2013, the American Cancer Society has received more than $280,000 in Choice Dollars® grant funds.

In addition, Thrivent's own wellness programs work to promote the health screenings advocated by the American Cancer Society. The Thrivent Employee Health Services department has a goal of screening 80% of company employees by 2018.

"Generosity is at the core of who we are at Thrivent," says Rasmussen. "Our work with the American Cancer Society has inspired Thrivent employees, our Community Engagement Teams, financial representatives and members across the country to actively advance the society's mission in all our communities."
