Supporting the Arts

Choice Dollars® grant funds help the Indiana Ballet Theatre bring dance to special-needs children

The Indiana Ballet Theatre has remained focused on a very simple mission for the past 34 years: Expose the region to the world of dance through performance, outreach and the finest education. Through original classical ballets and modern dance, children of all ages in the Merrillville, Indiana, community learn to cope with all life situations and become creative cognitive thinkers.

The ballet goes into communities of under-served children to provide opportunities to be included and feel welcome. They are also renovating and preserving the last remaining Nurses Home in America facility, bringing history, arts, gardens and education together.

Choice Dollars® grant funds are being used to help renovate the Indiana Ballet Theatre/Classical Arts Centre, which will become the theatre's new home once completed.

"We have 150 in our current cast, of which many are special-needs children or children from at-risk areas," says Gloria Tuohy, CEO, founder and artistic director of the theatre. She notes that the ballet's outreach efforts will increase significantly once the Classical Arts Centre is completed. "We strongly believe that the arts are essential to a healthy society. It's all about making the areas we live a better place for everyone."
