They were being tasked with finding ways to multiply the money, reflecting the Parable of the Talents from Matthew 25.

Jeanette Alton of Waterloo, Iowa, knows that even something as simple as a pillowcase can be transformed into something valuable and needed. For years she’s been buying pillowcases and transforming them into dresses and pants for kids living in poverty in other countries. But she wanted to do more.

And parents can’t always fill all the gaps. But, with the help of an innovative program offered to Thrivent members, parents and the community can pitch in.

Growing Home, an organization in Westminster, Colorado, serves 5,000 families per year. Its education and programs, designed to help families break the cycle of generational poverty, include early childhood intervention, a kid-friendly food pantry, an emergency shelter, homeless prevention, affordable and transitional housing, life skills classes, case management, medical services, and a resource and referral network.
