Celebrating 10 Years of Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity

Thousands of Thrivent members are "hammering out" what it means to live generously. And they're changing lives in the process. It all began in 2005. That's when Thrivent Financial formed a partnership with Habitat for Humanity. The goal? To provide funding and volunteers to help construct or repair homes across the globe.

"It's hard work," says Diane Simon, director of Thrivent Builds. "At the same time, it's the best work because it reaches your soul."

Since the partnership's inception 10 years ago, Thrivent and its members have committed $213 million (including a $12 million commitment in 2015) to support Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity.

But the real story lies in the people behind the partnership

To date, more than 600,000 volunteers have helped build or repair homes alongside partner families like the Hernandez-Mendozas. Esteben Hernandez and his wife put in a minimum of 300 hours of sweat equity to help construct their home. When asked how it felt to be a homeowner, Hernandez struggled to hold back his tears, "It's a dream," he said. "It's something that right now I can't describe."

In addition to sweat equity, the family completed a home ownership education program and saved a minimum of $1,000 toward their first year's property taxes and insurance. They are now responsible for making monthly mortgage payments on an affordable, no-interest loan, which is used to fund other Habitat homes.

By the numbers

  • In the last 10 years, 4,000 homes have been built, rehabbed or repaired in the U.S. and around the world through the Thrivent Builds program.
  • In 2015, Thrivent will engage members to improve communities by:
    • Building 121 homes.
    • Repairing up to 450 homes.
    • Sending up to 120 teams worldwide to build homes.
