Free Resources Help Aging Parents And Loved Ones Live Independently
July 21, 2017
When it comes to aging, two things stand out — numbers don’t lie and older adults aren't shy about saying what's on their minds.
According to research conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), nearly 90% of adults age 65 and older want to stay in their current home and community as they age — something referred to as "aging in place."1
And even when the need for day-to-day assistance or ongoing health care becomes necessary, older adults still prefer to stay in their homes. The reason is simple: They want to live by their own rules in a place that's theirs.
If you or your parents are nearing retirement age, are already there, or can see retirement in the rearview mirror, you likely can relate. That's also true if you’re caring for a parent or older adult, like many of us do.
The fear of losing one's independence is real
That's where the online independent living resource Silver Brick Road2 can come into play. It's a free Thrivent member benefit that helps you and your loved ones:
- Prepare and plan, starting with an independence assessment to identify potential needs and concerns in four specific areas — health and function, living environment, social connection and finance and planning. Based on the outcomes, you'll receive useful information to help make aging-related decisions and recommendations to maintain or improve your independence.
- Create a care circle that gives friends and family the opportunity to help manage a loved one's independence by sharing comments and observations, viewing updates, exchanging messages and staying connected.
- Learn and stay informed. The Silver Brick Road library features easy-to-digest articles, videos, checklists and tip sheets to help you manage and embrace the aging journey. It also gives you access to an interactive map to compare the costs of care nationwide.
- Receive expert objective guidance and support through Silver
Brick Road's care advocates.
