Chapter & Church Membership

Across the country, members of Thrivent are assigned to local chapters based on their ZIP code. In some instances, members may belong to a congregation that is not within the chapter to which they are assigned. This can be helpful to know in certain situations where you may have assumed all members in your chapter attend a congregation, within your chapter.

If any Thrivent members desire to change their chapter or congregational assignment, they can do so at any time. To update chapter membership, contact a representative from the Member Connection Center. To update congregational membership, either contact a representative from the Member Connection Center, or log in to Thrivent.com and go to MyThrivent.

Accurate church membership is helpful information for Thrivent, member leaders and service teams, but keeping it up to date can be challenging. There are steps you can take to help update church membership data.

  • Update Church Membership – Remind and encourage members to update their church membership in MyThrivent on Thrivent.com, or call the Member Connection Center. Members can also update their personal address, telephone number and email address on Thrivent.com. Prewritten text that you can use to promote this feature in chapter communications is available in the Chapter Mailing Service common articles.
  • Church Membership Directories – Another powerful option is to send paper church membership directories/rosters to Thrivent Financial. Directories will not be returned.
    Mail Fax Email

Email as an attachment to Box CIFHelp.

    When sending, please include:

    • Financial representative's name and code.
    • The church number, church name, city, state and ZIP code.
    • Date of the church directory (month and year). This can be the date the church directory was typed, created or updated. Directories more than one year old will not be processed.
    • Area code(s), phone numbers are listed on the directory.

Privacy

Church directories that indicate "Not to be used for marketing purposes" will not be processed due to the church's request and Thrivent's privacy policy. Directories containing a copyright statement indicating "not to be reproduced" will not be processed. Due to this statement, we are not able to use this directory as a source for adding these church members. Please contact the church to obtain a complete list of members from another source, such as a spread sheet. We can then proceed with processing.

Examples include:

  • Privacy Notice – "The member directory is provided to and intended for the use of the members of the church only. This Information should not be used for marketing purposes."
  • Copyright Statement – "Any unauthorized copying, duplicating, or reproducing of any portion of this publication constitutes a violation of U.S. copyright law, applicable state laws, and the publishers' policies, and is strictly forbidden. Severe penalties under U.S. copyright and other laws may result from such violations. This copy of the directory is and shall remain the property of this congregation or other organization and is intended for the private use of the members of this organization only."

Before sending, confirm the following:

  • The directory is complete, including first names.1
  • The information is an actual church directory or from a list and is reviewed for accuracy.
  • All pages of the directory are included. Be sure pages are readable and information doesn't get cut off when you make a copy.
  • Make any address or other changes right on the directory.
  • Addresses in the directory include the complete city, state and ZIP code.

Note: Submitting a directory has no impact on members who have previously requested to not receive mail or not to be marketed to.

1Church directories listing Mr. and Mrs. John Doe will create a record for John Doe but not Mrs. John Doe, as not enough information (first name) is available to create the record. This means that if Mrs. John Doe already exists in Thrivent records as Jane Doe and the record has a church number, processing the church directory will remove the church number because she wasn't listed on the church directory.
