Roth IRA
A Roth IRA offers an alternative to a traditional IRA. You make contributions to a Roth IRA with your after-tax dollars, but then do not pay federal income taxes on your future earnings as long as certain qualifications are met.   white space Man fishing

How you’ll benefit
A Roth IRA offers:

  • Tax advantages. Your Roth IRA contributions are not tax-deductible. However, earnings over the years are tax-deferred and potentially tax-free. You can also take distributions prior to age 59½ without taxes or penalties if you follow certain guidelines.
  • Flexibility. As with the traditional IRA, you may invest your Roth IRA assets in a variety of funding options based on your personal financial goals. Additionally, you’re not required to begin taking distributions from your Roth IRA at age 70½.
  • Conversion option. Depending on your income, you can convert your Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. It’s important to note that any non-taxed portion of the amount you convert is considered taxable income in the year in which you convert.

When to consider

Individual investors who are single or married and file jointly, and who have a modified adjusted gross income under applicable federal limits, can convert to a Roth IRA. This includes minors and anyone over the age of 70½.
