Q. What happens when I use Instant Data Entry?
A. The Thrivent Mutual Funds have entered into an agreement with Intuit Inc. to provide shareholders the opportunity to electronically import 1099 tax reporting information directly and automatically via TurboTax® desktop software or TurboTax® for the Web from the financial institution to their individual tax return.
Q. What do I need on hand before using this feature?
A. Besides your Social Security number or tax ID number, you will need your Investor Number found on quarterly and year-end Mutual Fund account statements. When entering your Investor Number, do not include any letters and if longer than eight numbers, use only the first eight.
Note: If you receive multiple statements, please see the question “I receive multiple Mutual Fund Statements. Which Investor Number do I use?” question below.
Q. How do I locate my Investor Number? Where do I find my Investor Number on my statement?
A. Your Investor Number is located on your Thrivent Mutual Funds quarterly or year-end statement towards the very top of the first page. When entering your Investor Number, do not include any letters and if longer than eight numbers, use only the first eight.
Note: If you receive multiple statements, please see the question “I receive multiple Mutual Fund Statements. Which Investor Number do I use?” question below.
Q. I receive multiple Mutual Fund Statements? Which Investor Number do I use?
A. Select the scenario below that best matches your situation to determine which specific Investor Number to use.
- I have multiple Investor Numbers that are a series of numbers only and do not have a letter prefix.
Enter the lowest Investor Number for Instant Date Entry. Tax data for the all the accounts for the SSN entered will be retrieved. Example: Investor Number 45678909 and Investor Number 45788987. This shareholder would use 45678909.
- I have at least one Investor Number that is numbers only and at least one that has a letter prefix.
Enter the lowest investor number that does not start with a letter prefix. Tax data for the all the accounts for the SSN entered will be retrieved. Example: Investor Number 45678909 and Investor Number SDI - 9999. This shareholder would use 45678909.
- All my Investor Numbers start with a letter prefix. At least one Investor Number starts with the letter prefix SDI and at least one starts with the letter prefix OPT.
Enter the lowest Investor Number that starts with SDI, but when entering, do not enter the letter prefix. Tax data for the all the accounts for the SSN entered will be retrieved. Example: Investor number SDI - 9999 and Investor Number OPT - 30000098 This shareholder would enter 9999.
Q. If I have a large amount of data to import, can TurboTax® handle the import?
A. TurboTax® for the Web supports the importation of up to 250 Schedule D transactions. If you have more than 250 Schedule D transactions, you may want to use the TurboTax® desktop version. Its software supports up to 5,000 transactions. However, your system configuration (processor type, speed and memory) will determine the number of transactions that can be imported without a noticeable degradation of system performance.
Q. Can I import data for all accounts?
A. The TurboTax® Instant Data Entry feature will import all of your mutual fund accounts with matching Social Security Numbers or Tax ID Numbers (SSN/TIN).
Q. Can I import data for just select accounts?
A. When importing your mutual fund data through TurboTax®, data from all of your accounts will be included, if they match the SSN/TIN entered. After the data is imported, you can review your information and delete specific accounts that you do not wish to report.
Q. Will Instant Data Entry import my gain/loss information on redemptions made from my mutual fund accounts?
A. If average cost is available to you on your 1099-B, it will transfer with this feature into your Turbo Tax® 1040 tax return.
Q. What if I want to delete some of the imported information in my returns?
A. When importing your mutual fund data through TurboTax®, data from all of your accounts will be included, if they match the SSN/TIN entered. After the data is imported, you can review your information and delete the accounts you do not want included in your return.
Q. Is this Instant Data Entry service secure?
A. To maximize the security of shareholders’ accounts, there are several screening measures in place:
- A login process that requires entering personal identification numbers like Social Security and Investor Number.
- The service uses the latest encryption technology via Netscape Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology. Encryption is the transformation of data into a form unreadable by anyone who does not have the appropriate decryption key. The following browsers support SSL: Netscape Navigator 2.0 or greater, Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0 or greater, Oracle Powerbrowser, America Online (AOL) Web Browser 3.0 or greater.
Q. Can I import data from other financial institutions?
A. Yes. Once you have completed importing data from the Thrivent Mutual Funds, you may return to the list of financial institutions and select others with whom you invest.
Note: Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, its affiliates and financial representatives do not provide tax advice. Due to the complexity of the tax laws, we recommend consulting a tax advisor or the IRS for questions regarding your specific tax situation.
