Customer Account Record FAQ

The primary purpose of Rule 17a-3 (Books and Records) is to provide regulators—particularly State Securities Regulators—access to customer books and records to review for compliance with suitability rules. See more in www.sec.gov/rules/final/34-44992.htm

Why do I receive this letter?
In 2001, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) amended Rule17a-3 (Books and Records). The revised amendments, in part, require that broker/dealers obtain, store, maintain and return client and suitability information for all owners of securities products.

What products does this pertain to?
The rule covers owners of all securities products including variable universal life, variable deferred annuities, variable immediate annuities, variable settlement options, mutual funds, 529 Plans and brokerage products including equities, fixed income products, options, etc.

What is the required suitability information?
The rule requires the customer's name, tax identification number, address, telephone number, date of birth, employment status (including occupation and whether the customer is an associated person of a member, broker or dealer), annual income, net worth (excluding value of primary residence), and investment objective for each registration. The investment objective must be reflective of all products within the registration.

What is a registration?
Thrivent Investment Management Inc identified 15 registration types under which securities products are held. These registrations are common to those found at most broker-dealer firms. The registrations are: Individual, Joint, Business, IRA, Roth IRA, SEP IRA, Employer Retirement Plan, 401(k), SIMPLE IRA / SARSEP, 403b, Trust, Estate, 529 Plans, Education, Custodial.

What are the investment objectives?
Thrivent Investment Management Inc has the following investment objectives and definitions:

  • Aggressive Growth – focus is on generating growth and/or income with a willingness to assume a high level of risk.
  • Growth – focus is on generating long-term growth of capitol, offset by a low level of income.
  • Balanced/Conservative Growth – focus is on generating current income and/or long term growth.
  • Preservation of Principal/Income – focus is on preservation of principal and/or income.

How often will I receive this type of letter?
As required by the SEC ruling, we will periodically request updates if there has been no other activity that would have triggered a review and update of the data within the past three years. If, during the year, a new registration is opened, or if there are changes to certain existing registration information (e.g., investment objective changes, ownership changes, etc.), you will receive another letter confirming the information. You do not need to respond if all the information is accurate.
