The assistant financial director is an optional, elected position with voting
rights. The person in this role supports the financial director in maintaining
financial records for the chapter leadership board. The person
is part of a board that provides direction, leadership and administrative
support to service teams.
What will the assistant financial director do?
Assist the financial director in maintaining financial accounting
for the leadership board, including service teams. If called
on, the assistant financial director will:
- Verify and track requests from service teams for program funding.
- Respond to service teams regarding board approval of requested projects
or funding.
- Collect and retain receipts from service teams.
- Verify service team expenses and year-end financial reporting to
the Operations Center.
- Maintain income and expense records for the leadership board
and service teams.
- Fill in, as necessary, when the financial director is absent.
- Possibly be well-prepared to eventually fill the leadership position of
the financial director.
How much time will this position require each month?
This depends on the number of service teams in the chapter, about
six to eight hours a month. As with all elected chapter leadership positions, the person serves for one year (January to December) with a maximum of four consecutive terms in any elected leadership position. If the four-consecutive-term limit is met, the person must take a two-year break before he or she can be re-elected to
another board position.
How will Thrivent Financial support this position?
The manager of Lutheran Community Services (MLCS) and the supporting staff
at the regional financial office (RFO) will provide direction, guidance and
training for this position. There will be regular contact, in person and
by phone or e-mail. An orientation will be provided, together with regular
communication.
What knowledge, skills, qualities will someone need to fulfill the
role?
- Access to e-mail and Internet expected.*
- Commitment to the mission and vision of Thrivent Financial and the
chapter leadership board.
- Desire to engage members in meaningful volunteer activities.
- Experience in financial reporting is desirable.
- Excellent accounting skills.
- Ability to manage large sums of money and track income and expenses.

Communications director

The communications director is an optional, elected position with voting rights. The person in this role supports service teams and the chapter as
he or she communicates with the public. This position is part of a board that provides direction, leadership and administrative support to service teams.
What will the communications director do?
The primary responsibilities are to guide and support service teams
in communicating with congregations and communities. This person also
acts as the liaison with the Operations Center, the regional financial
office (RFO) and the Manager of Lutheran Community Services (MLCS). The communications director will:
- Develop and distribute communications to service teams and members.
- Assist the vice president as legislative contact for the chapter.
- Invite elected officials to attend chapter activities, especially highly
visible activities.
- Act as liaison (the "eyes and ears") with the Operations Center,
the regional financial office (RFO) and the Manager of Lutheran Community
Services (MLCS).
- Develop and distribute Thrivent Financial press releases to local
media. Submit press releases about service team activities.
- Develop contacts with local journalists and other media.
- Be willing to be interviewed for local media, and support service
teams that receive interview requests.
- Support service teams in promoting their activities to encourage
member and community engagement.
- Utilize the chapter mailing service to communicate with members.
How much time will this position require each month?
About eight to 12 hours a month. As with all elected chapter leadership positions, this person serves for one year (January
to December) with a maximum of four consecutive terms in any elected leadership position. If the four-consecutive-term limit is met, the
person must take a two year break before he or she can be re-elected to
another board position.

The Manager of Lutheran Community Services (MLCS) and the supporting staff at the regional financial office (RFO) will provide direction, guidance and training for this position. An orientation will be provided, together with regular communication. The Visibility Toolkit, a guide and resource for building visibility, is available online at www.thrivent.com/visibility. And through the Chapter Mailing Service, chapter leaders can send four mailings per year to chapter members, plus congregational coordinator mailings, activity postcards, and election invitationsall free of charge.

The community service team director is an optional, elected position with voting
rights. In this role, the person supports community service teams. He or she
encourages them to form and initiate activities to qualify for funding through
the Care Abounds in Communities® program that support individuals, families
and qualified not-for-profit organizations. The person plays a significant role
in working to increase member engagement and growth.
What will the community service team director do?
Responsibilities include encouraging member engagement through the formation
of service teams in local communities. The community service team director will:
- Train and support community service teams.
- Initiate and suggest activities for community service teams to
qualify for funding.
- Provide follow-up to community service teams to assure activities
are completed, funded and reported to the Operations Center.
- Evaluate and monitor progress toward chapter goals.
- Provide feedback to the leadership Board on the progress
of community service teams.
How much time will this position require each month?
About four to five hours a month. As with all elected chapter leadership board positions, the person serves for one year (January

The events director is an optional, elected position with voting rights. The
person works with the chapter leadership board and, in some cases, the Lutheran
Community Services (LCS) Team to determine appropriate recognition and events sponsored by the chapter leadership board. They are part of a board that provides direction, leadership and administrative support to service teams.
What will the events director do?
Responsibilities are to work with the chapter leadership board
and the Lutheran Community Services (LCS) Team to determine what events will take place (e.g. training events, election meeting events, etc.) and how and
where they will be carried out. Also, the events director will:
- Develop plans to recognize chapter leadership board members
and service team volunteers.
- Plan volunteer gatherings or recognition events such as congregational coordinator training or election meetings.
- Provide guidance and expertise to service teams in planning projects
and events.
- Design and set up displays at events in cooperation with the communications
director.
- Assume responsibility for visibility-creating activities, using the Visibility Toolkit as a resource.
How much time will this position take each month?
About four to six hours a month (could be more during "peak" events). As with all elected chapter leadership positions, this person serves for one year (January to December) with a maximum of four consecutive terms in any elected leadership position. and service team activities. He or she is part of a board that provides strategic
direction, leadership planning and administrative support to service teams.
What will the youth director do?
The primary responsibilities are to involve youth in service-learning
projects and programs at educational sites. The youth director will:
- Organize teams of youth or students to lead projects or form community
service teams.
- Make youth groups aware of opportunities to get involved in community
service teams.
- Promote Thrivent Financial programs to youth at churches and schools.
- Support youth and their involvement, and represent them on the chapter leadership board.
- Encourage youth involvement in JOIN HANDS DAY.
How much time will this position require each month?
