Fraternal benefit society - Thrivent Financial for Lutherans

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is the largest fraternal benefit society in the United States.

Fraternal benefit societies are similar in several ways to commercial companies in that they both are:

  • Able to offer insurance products.
  • Chartered and licensed according to state insurance laws.
  • Regulated and examined by state insurance departments.

However, there are fundamental differences. For example, fraternal benefit societies are:

  • Composed of members who are joined together in local units called chapters.
  • Required by law to be not-for-profit, and to conduct charitable, benevolent (helping), social or educational programs and activities to benefit their members and the communities in which they live.
  • Required to have a representative form of government.
