The president demonstrates leadership to the chapter board, which provides strategic direction, leadership planning and administration support to congregational and community service teams.

What will the president do?
Responsibilities are to provide leadership to the board, which is composed of five to 10 elected leadership positions plus several advisory board members. The president will:

  • Oversee the planning and strategic direction of the board.
  • Schedule and conduct regular meetings.
  • Provide direction and oversee the activity level of service teams.
  • Ensure that the chapter leadership board election occurs.
  • Ensure that the annual financial audit occurs.
  • Mentor the vice president.
  • Welcome and admit new members.
  • Install new chapter leaders.
  • Solicit input from advisory members of the chapter leadership board.

How much time will this position require each month?
About eight to 10 hours a month. As with all elected chapter leadership positions, this person serves for one year (January to December) with a maximum of four consecutive terms in any elected leadership position. If the four-consecutive-term limit is met, the person must take a two-year break before he or she can be elected to another board position. The president will mentor the vice president, preparing that person for likely service as president.

The Manager of Lutheran Community Services (MLCS) and the supporting staff at the regional financial office (RFO) will provide direction, guidance and training for this position. There will be regular contact, in person, by phone, and/or by e-mail. An orientation will be provided, together with regular communication and a special area on the Thrivent Financial Web site.

What knowledge, skills, qualities will someone need to fulfill the role?

  • Access to e-mail and the Internet highly encouraged.*
  • Experience as a team leader is desirable.
  • Understanding of the community, local churches and organizations.
  • Good oral and written communication skills. Public speaking skills are important.
  • Ability to encourage and recognize others.
  • Experience or ability to run meetings.
  • Ability to delegate responsibility and authority.
  • Commitment to the mission and vision of Thrivent Financial and the chapter leadership board.
  • Desire to engage members in meaningful volunteer activities.
  • Ability to attract and retain new Thrivent Financial members.

Vice president (elected, required)

The vice president provides leadership in the absence of the president. The person may be well-prepared to seek election to the presidency once the incumbent steps down. The vice president is part of a board that provides strategic direction, leadership planning and administration support to congregational and community service teams. The vice president works with the communications director to invite elected officials to chapter activities and leads the Nominating Committee for identifying future chapter leaders.

What will the vice president do?
Responsibilities are to provide leadership to the board in the absence of the president and to consider possible election to the presidency after the current president leaves office. Together with, or in the absence of the president, this position will:

  • Oversee planning and strategic direction of the board.
  • Provide direction and oversee the activity level of service teams.
  • Ensure that the chapter leadership board election and the annual financial audit occur.
  • Serve as legislative contact for the chapter.
  • Invite elected officials to attend chapter activities, especially highly visible activities.
  • Track and retain documented record of elected officials' attendance at chapter activities.
  • Serve as the leader of the Nominating Committee, to identify future chapter leaders.
  • Ensure recognition of volunteer efforts.

How much time will this position require each month?
About six to ten hours a month. The records director provides leadership to the administrative functions of the leadership board. This person is part of a board that provides strategic direction, leadership planning and administration support to service teams.

What will the records director do?
The primary responsibilities involve maintaining chapter leadership board records. The records director will:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, planning calendars and meeting minutes for the chapter leadership board.
  • Receive and process correspondence to and from community service teams.
  • Submit necessary nonfinancial reports to the Operations Center.
  • Verify that reporting is accurate.

How much time will this position require each month?
About eight to 10 hours a month. As with all elected chapter leadership positions, this position serves for one year (January to December) with a maximum of four consecutive terms in any elected leadership position. Financial director (elected, required)

The financial director plays a significant role in maintaining financial records for the chapter leadership board. The person is part of a board that provides strategic direction, leadership planning and administration support to service teams.

What will the financial director do?
The primary responsibility is maintaining financial accounting for the entire leadership board, which includes the service teams. The financial director will:

  • Verify and track requests from service teams for program funding.
  • Respond to service teams regarding board approval of requested project/funding.
  • Collect and retain receipts from service teams for all Care program activities and operating funds expenditures.
  • Manage the chapter's operating funds budget.
  • Maintain financial records of income and expenses for the leadership board and service teams.
  • Report the chapter's financial condition at each chapter board meeting.
  • Assume primary responsibility for the chapter checking account and its activity.

How much time will this position require each month?
The time spent depends on the number of service teams within the chapter and if an assistant financial director serves with the financial director. An average is about 15 hours a month. As with all elected chapter leadership positions, the person serves for one year (January to December) with a maximum of four consecutive terms in any elected leadership position. If the four-consecutive-term limit is met, a two-year break in service must be taken before he or she can be re-elected to a board position.

How will Thrivent Financial support this position?
The Manager of Lutheran Community Services (MLCS) and the supporting staff at the regional financial office (RFO) will provide direction, guidance and training for this position. There will be regular contact, in person, by phone and/or by e-mail. An orientation will be provided, together with regular communication. The data regarding funds raised and expenses will be be compiled into a report by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans using data from the Fraternal Online System and the bank account to assist with year-end reporting.

What knowledge, skills, qualities will the person need to fulfill the role?

  • Ability to manage large sums of money and track income and expenses.

Congregational service team director (elected, required)

The congregational service team director is a required elected position with voting rights. The person in this role supports the congregational service teams by encouraging them to form and initiate activities that qualify for congregational program funds. The director plays a significant role in working to increase member engagement and growth in congregations within the chapter. This person serves on a board that provides strategic direction, leadership planning and administrative support to service teams.

What will the congregational service team director do?
Responsibilities include encouraging member engagement through the formation of service teams at the congregational setting. The congregational service team director will:

  • Monitor congregational coordinator vacancies in congregations within the chapter.
  • Support recruitment efforts to fill vacancies to ensure funding occurs through the Care in Congregations® program.
  • Serve as a liaison between the chapter and the congregational coordinator team.
  • Train and support congregational coordinators
  • Encourage congregational service teams to conduct activities that qualify for funding.
  • Provide follow-up to congregational service teams to ensure that activities are pre-approved, completed, funded and reported to the Operations Center.
  • Provide feedback to the chapter leadership board on the progress of congregational service teams.

How much time will this position require each month?
About six to 10 hours a month, depending on the number of congregations in the chapter. As with all elected chapter leadership positions, this position serves for one year (January to December) with a maximum of four consecutive terms of any elected leadership position. If the four-consecutive-term limit is met, the person must take a two-year break from service before he or she can be re-elected to a board position.
