Financial Baggage - How does your past impact your financial outlook today?

If you stop to consider your “money legacy”—how the dollar has affected your life so far—you’ll start to understand the financial attitudes you bring to your marriage. That’s what Thrivent Financial representative Alex Gonzalez tells engaged couples at Thrivent Financial-sponsored “From Me to We” workshops.

The first step?

Ask yourself:

  1. Did I come from a background of scarcity or abundance?
  2. Who took care of money issues in my family?
  3. When did I take charge of my own money?
  4. Did money ever cause stress or conflict in my family?

Next step?

Talk about your future financial goals as a couple:

  1. What are our non-financial goals?
  2. What are our financial goals?
  3. How do these goals support one another?
  4. What are our plans for saving money?
  5. Do we have plans for sharing our financial resources?

Now, note the past experiences and future goals you have in common with your partner and discuss responses that differ. You’re bound to learn something.

—H. P.
