An Energy Efficient Build

by Sarah Asp Olson

In 2007, the Richmond, Indiana, Wayne-Henry County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans teamed up with Habitat for Humanity and COPE Environmental Center in nearby Centerville, Indiana, to construct a Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity® home that will continue to give back to its homeowners year after year.

Instead of using traditional wood building materials, Thrivent Builds chapter specialist Darlene Moegerle and her team decided to partner with COPE Environmental Center to build a non-traditional, energy-efficient house using ARXX building products. (View pictures.) The building process took the home beyond the energy-efficient materials used in typical Habitat houses.

ARXX homes are insulated with poured concrete sandwiched between Styrofoam-like walls. The cost of such a home is slightly higher up front (about 10 percent more in this case), but the payoff for homeowners down the road can be substantial—as much as 50 percent less in total energy costs, or a savings of about $30 each month.

“The positive aspect of the energy savings was exciting to everybody,” says Moegerle, who found a donor to put up the additional $5,000 in building costs. “It really wasn’t a hard sell.”

Though the Richmond chapter has no Thrivent Builds houses on the docket for 2008, they hope to partner with COPE again in the future to build a zero-energy house using solar panels and wind power.
