Martha Davis is an e-volunteer to the extreme. Every volunteer activity this 54-year-old Thrivent Financial for Lutherans member from Baytown, Texas, does is on her computer. Not only is she the volunteer Webmaster for five Web sites, but she also provides Web consulting to the other 49 Thrivent chapters in the Texas Region of Thrivent Financial.
“I love computers,” says Davis. “Since I became disabled, I had too much time on my hands. Volunteering is just part of me and this is a way for me to help from my home.”
Davis became disabled six years ago after a series of medical problems that left her left leg numb. She had been an active volunteer with her church, her two sons’ Boy Scout troops and their school Parent Teacher Association, and was a 25-year accounting veteran.
“I got into Web design out of boredom,” says Davis, who is self-taught. “It started with my church’s Web site and then evolved from there. It’s a way to serve God and help other people.”
Davis’ Web sites include those of her church, her Thrivent chapter, the Thrivent Financial Texas Region, another local church and a childcare center.
“My work gets me up and going every day,” she says. “I usually work from about 9:30 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon. If I didn’t have this, I’d probably just stay in bed all day. Over the years I’ve received a lot of help in different ways. This is my way to give back.”
