Value Checking —
A Welcome note from Thrivent Financial
As
the old saying goes, “It’s not enough to talk the talk,
you have to walk the walk.” Meaning: The values that provide
us with our moral road map have to be more than a set of directions
we promise to follow. For these values to have significance, they
have to be manifested in the actions we take.
This is never easy—especially when it comes to money. In a consumer culture filled with temptations, bringing your financial actions in line with your values can mean making tough decisions. It can mean saying “no” more often than saying “yes.” It can mean preparing for tomorrow instead of living for today.
Studies show that most people are struggling with their “money values.” The majority of Americans haven’t spent enough time planning their finances. Many haven’t measured how much money they will need for retirement. Many are mired in unnecessary consumer debt. Yet, at the same time, Americans are working increasingly long hours to take care of their families. Many are giving back to their communities—and wish they could give more.
What’s the solution to finding a better balance among sharing, saving and spending? You can find a start in this issue’s cover story, a quiz (page 12) that will help you examine your “money values.”
Fear not: No math is required. Most of these questions you can answer off the top of your head. This quiz is, quite simply, an easy step toward making smarter sharing, saving and spending decisions. We hope you enjoy it, as well as the rest of this issue of Thrivent magazine.
Sincerely,
