When to Buy Med Supp Insurance

When should you buy Medicare supplement insurance?

Shop ahead of time
Give yourself a few months to shop before you need coverage. This shopping period will give you time to decide which Medicare supplement insurance plan is right for you and will allow you to compare insurance companies. Ask questions, get answers and give yourself time to make an informed decision.

Take advantage of open enrollment
Federal law requires a six-month open enrollment period when you enroll in Medicare Part B and are at least age 65. During this period, Medicare supplement insurers cannot refuse you coverage or charge higher premiums because of health conditions.

Open enrollment eligibility requirements may vary by state. They generally require you to be at least 65 years of age and enrolled in Medicare Part B; or, in select states, under age 65, with a disability or end-stage renal disease, and enrolled in Medicare Part B.

You may delay enrolling in Medicare Part B if you or your spouse are working and have group health coverage through an employer or your spouse's, active employment. Your open enrollment period will not start until after you sign up for Medicare Part B.

If you miss your open enrollment period, you still can apply for Medicare supplement insurance1, but you will probably be asked health questions when you apply to determine if you are insurable.
