Janet Schmieding
Third Lake, IL
Lake-Cook County Chapter #30033

Jan Schmieding stepped forward in 2005 to help with the Thrivent Builds Homes pilot initiative. Serving as chapter specialist for the Lake-Cook County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, she helped organize the kick-off event to introduce the program to congregational coordinators and pastors of the three chapters working with the Habitat for Humanity affiliate. She attended monthly chapter meetings to report on the progress of the program and recruited Thrivent Builds congregational champions from seven of the 15 congregations in the chapter. Her chapter provided 42 crews who donated more than 3,000 volunteer hours and raised $21,695. Recruiting congregational champions of all ages to work together on this program, Jan helped find the best ways to involve the youth, who arranged tours, made and delivered lunches for volunteers, and held fund-raisers.

Jan was also active on numerous community service teams. Activities she was involved with helped raise money for disaster relief in New Orleans, support a mission project on an Indian reservation in South Dakota, build a handicapped-accessible playground for children with cerebral palsy, support a local food pantry and homeless shelter, and benefited an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) hunger program.

She also serves her congregation as treasurer and is responsible for payroll and accounts payable. She maintains the congregation’s databases for membership records and financial records and supervises the volunteer mailing crew. She also serves on the Early Childhood Ministries Advisory Board, which oversees the preschool at Holy Cross Lutheran Church and the Mom’s Morning Out program for 2-year-olds.
