Hildred L. Dungan
Eden Prairie, MN
Southwest Hennepin County Chapter #30101
It was a very productive year for the Southwest Hennepin County
Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans with Hildred Dungan
serving as the president. Under her leadership, the chapter rotated
its meeting schedule to include several member churches, added
a “meet and greet,” and invited host pastors to lead
devotions, giving them a chance to learn more about the chapter
system. Together with the congregational service team director,
Hildred also set up chapter elections in 22 out of 24 member congregations
and was instrumental in recruiting chapter leaders. With her encouragement,
the chapter has three congregational coordinators in place at each
congregation, for a total of 72 volunteers. She also ensured that
all of the Care in Congregations® and Care Abounds in Communities® dollars
available to the chapter were used to benefit the community.
In addition to her chapter duties, Hildred volunteers with the
American Red Cross for local and national disasters, and her expertise
was in great demand in 2005. As a First Responder Volunteer, she
is called to fire disasters to help clients with temporary housing,
meals and clothing, if necessary. She also volunteers at educational
events and blood drives. Last year, she drove the Minneapolis Red
Cross emergency-response vehicle to Mobile, Alabama, with another
volunteer the day after Hurricane Katrina hit. For three weeks,
she was part of the national disaster-relief volunteer team that
served meals to the people affected by that disaster. Working each
day from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Hildred helped feed 900 people each
day, sleeping at night in churches and a high school gym with 200
other volunteers. One week after returning home, a tornado hit
the northern suburbs of Minneapolis and again she was on location
immediately to help. The following week, she was asked to work
at the American Red Cross call center in Washington, D.C., and
served there for three more weeks.
In her spare time, Hildred volunteers at Zachary Lane School where
her daughter is a 4th grade teacher. There she helps correct papers,
assists with reading tests and helps with other projects as needed.
She also volunteers with Share, Save, Spend, a business established
to teach parents and children the importance of charitable giving,
saving money and spending wisely, where she assists her son in
a variety of jobs. It should come as no surprise to hear Hildred
say, “I enjoy volunteering, as I have plenty of energy to
share and there are so many organizations and people that need
help.”
