Elizabeth Paes
Prague, NE
Saunders County Chapter

Elizabeth serves on the Saunders County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans as the records director, but she does so much more! She is committed to serving the people in her community and takes the initiative to create service opportunities. When the chapter decided to sponsor a food drive for the tornado victims, Elizabeth was the one to speak up and take charge. With the help of Thrivent Financial Associate Chris Leaver, she was able to obtain food at wholesale prices and contacted 11 congregations in Saunders County to encourage them to participate. The members collected $1,959, which along with $1,000 from the chapter, resulted in $2,959 (wholesale!) worth of food going to the victims of the May tornadoes. Using this same method, Elizabeth went on to support a chapter-wide food drive for the local food pantries.

She and her husband live in the small community of Prague and, together, they got the entire community involved in a JOIN HANDS DAY project for disaster relief last year. And after the tornadoes hit southeast Nebraska in May, she organized a baking spree in which youth and adults baked 55 dozen cookies and bars. These were packaged and delivered to the Orphan Grain Train in Hallam to serve volunteers and families recovering from the tornadoes. Prague is only 50 - 60 miles from the tornado devastation, yet the residents of this town took the time to bake and deliver goodies prior to their own clean-up effort. Elizabeth also worked with several community organizations, including Catholic Charities, to organize a community JOIN HANDS DAY clean-up effort for Prague.

In addition, Elizabeth is very involved at her congregation, where she leads a Saturday evening worship and prayer service. She is active with the Thrivent Financial congregation coordinators and assists them with their activities as well. It seems there is just no end to her giving spirit!
