Harlan and Deb Matasovsky
Kristin, Tim, Katie and Ryan
Storm Lake, Iowa
Buena Vista County Chapter #31126
Everyone
in the Matasovsky family is an active member of the Buena Vista
County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
As president of the chapter, Harlan
promotes participation among members and sets the example by involving his
entire family. Together the family helped organize and participated
in several Join
Hands Day activities, including the Star-Spangled Spectacular on July 4,
where they served food for more than 10,000 people, and a clean-up
day at Okoboji Lutheran
Bible Camp.
As president, Harlan was instrumental in engaging all 17 of the
chapter’s
congregations in Care Abounds in Communities® and Care in Congregations® program
activities and utilizing virtually all funds available through the programs.
In his congregation, Harlan is chairman of the lay ministers, serves on the stewardship
board, teaches Junior High Sunday school, and serves as counselor for the congregation’s
Senior and Junior High Youth Gatherings. He also coaches youth baseball and
softball teams.
Deb is active in their congregation teaching Sunday school and mid-week classes,
singing in choir, and serving on the Youth Committee, where she helps the youth
organize activities at which the Matasovskys often chaperone. Deb also serves
as a 4-H leader, is involved in Parent Teacher Groups, and is active in the
public-school music boosters. Harland and Deb are both good examples for their
children, who also are active volunteers in their congregation, community and
schools.
Kristin, a junior at Concordia University, served as a Petal Pusher for the
Rose Bowl Lutheran Hour float, made two mission trips to Los Angeles and Belize,
was a Young Adult Volunteer at the National Youth Gathering in Orlando, helped
with the Junior and Senior High Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS)
District Youth Gathering, and taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday school.
Tim, a high school senior, volunteers at an after-school program working with
younger children, and supervised children during Hispanic Bible studies and
retreats. Tim and his sister, Katie, a freshman, supervise children during
Hispanic Bible studies and retreats and help out with Vacation Bible School.
Tim, Katie and younger brother Ryan, 7th grade, also volunteer at local nursing
homes, serve Meals-on-Wheels and help with community clean-ups. Ryan is a student
ambassador at the local middle school, and all four children share their talents
with musical groups in church and in the community.
