Tom Mischka credits his parents for setting a tone that we all
have talents we can share with others. It’s an approach
to life that Tom has demonstrated well. And often.
“I need a purpose beyond me,” he said. “I feel
it’s our responsibility to help and support others.”
Much of Tom’s volunteering is wrapped around his ongoing
support of the Emergency Shelter of the Fox Valley. The agency
provides temporary shelter to more than 900 people annually, case
management to promote independence, and a prevention program to
help people from becoming homeless.
Tom not only helps lead the agency as its board president, he
also has been active behind the scenes upgrading their computer
system, recruiting new board members, helping with fund-raising
and gaining support from local congregations.
His passion to help fits well with an organization that shares
and encourages concern for others.
“Thrivent Financial has given me the flexibility to support
the shelter,” he said. “I love working for an organization
that allows us to incorporate volunteerism into our work. What
better way to do team-building than helping others less fortunate.”
His commitment to the community shows in other ways, as well.
Each month, Tom serves on a United Way Fox Cities committee that
ensures local United Way dollars are properly invested in programs
that help meet basic needs of individuals and families.
He also volunteers each year at Appleton’s Octoberfest celebration,
an event that draws thousands of participants and brings in revenue
that supports a variety of downtown projects and local nonprofit
agencies.
For Tom, lending a hand is all about giving what we can to make
a difference. It’s as simple—and important—as
that.
“I am very honored by this (Volunteer Excellence) award,” he
said. “But the reason I volunteer is to have a positive impact
on others.” |
