Minneapolis Brian
Mair doesn’t just believe that volunteering is worthwhile,
he also believes it’s a lot of fun! And it’s evident
to those around him how much he enjoys what he’s doing. Just
the way he talks about his volunteer activities inspires his coworkers
to get involved.
Much of Brian’s volunteer service involves youth. At Grace
& Truth Chapel, he is a youth group leader for high school students,
where he helps them better understand God’s Word and has the
opportunity to show them that living a Christian life can be enjoyable.
He also teaches 3-4 graders at church on Tuesday nights during the
school year and he’s an e-mentor and tutor for Folwell Middle
School students.
“I definitely think volunteering is a lot of fun. I love
to spend time building relationships with kids. I’ve met kids
from such a wide range of backgrounds and with such different personalities,”
he said.
Young people need role models who consistently show positive values
and attitudes, truly care about them, and maintain a regular presence
in their lives. And Brian does just that. At a time when many youth
are experiencing peer pressure to get involved in other activities,
Brian models for them constructive ways to have fun and make a difference
in the lives of others.
Each summer he serves two weeks as a counselor at Living Waters
Bible Camp in Westby, WI. He has counseled for all different ages.
He introduces kids to new experiences and learning opportunities.
He also has the opportunity to help campers develop a personal relationship
with Christ. That is key to him.
Brian’s commitment to these young people doesn’t end
when camp does or the school year is over. He goes beyond his volunteer
work to cultivate personal relationships with the kids at camp and
church. He helps plan and participates in various activities for
the kids throughout the year, such as Christian concerts, Twins
games and fund-raising dinners.
“I truly enjoy mentoring kids. In one case, I’ve had
a chance at camp to counsel three boys from the same family. Through
them, I’ve come to know the entire family,” he said.
“I’ve encouraged this family and they have encouraged
me. It’s awesome to experience.”
Brian truly exemplifies the fraternal mission and Christian values
of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans by working with adults, as well.
He volunteers at the House of Charity, where he serves lunch for
the homeless, has a sincere interest in people of any age and doesn’t
hesitate to help others whenever and in whatever way he can.
When it comes right down to it, volunteering is simply ingrained
in Brian’s life, beliefs and personality. And he wants others
to share the joy he finds in helping others.
