"I can do all things through Him who strengthens me."
To financial representative Larry Behnken, Philippians 4:13 is more than just a personal motto; it’s a way of life. Through his work with Thrivent Financial, Larry is heeding a rigorous calling and relies on God’s strength for guidance and sustenance.
For example, Larry’s courage became evident when he did something quite out of the ordinary: He started his business from scratch with people who, to that point, had no relationship with the organization. Larry simply sat down and wrote out a list of his friends, family and acquaintances, and contacted them as his first clients and for referrals. As a result, Larry earned companywide recognition for leading in the number of new members—an impressive achievement no matter the approach.
And Larry feels compelled to treat his ever-growing network of members with the most compassionate of care. In fact, if a client passes away, he takes it upon himself to connect with the widow or widower once a week for a full year following the funeral. Financial advice might very well be part of those phone calls and visits, but it tends to be much more than that. Larry feels privileged to help such hurting individuals through the grieving process and, more often than not, Philippians 4:13 has also provided them confidence and comfort when their fears and emotions surface.
"It’s really a family business," says a humble Larry, whose wife, Judy, has offered invaluable support and encouragement over the years. Larry’s daughter, Jennifer, sets up appointments for his annual reviews with clients. And Larry’s sons have both followed in their dad’s entrepreneurial footsteps. Daniel owns a brick and stone business, and Jonathan shares an office and does joint work with his dad as a Thrivent Financial representative himself. Larry and Judy are also the proud grandparents of nine grandchildren.
